“Connected to each other, we are stronger.”
My Grandma passed away in the middle of July 2017. I am asked to give the eulogy and over the next few nights I lay awake wondering what I should say. She was inspiring, vivacious, generous, funny and also a strong force.
One night between dreams and sleep I find the words and write them down. I honor her stories, her heritage, and her resiliency as gifts passed down to each of us, the way strength travels through shared root. I feel a sense of completeness in acknowledging her life this way. On the day of her service, I stay strong while speaking these words. My voice only cracks at the last part, where I wish her peace. When I am finished, I am in tears. I find my seat in the pews and bury my face in my husband’s sleeve. I feel so sad in my grief and so detached. Suddenly, I feel several hands on my back- family members reach out to place their palms on me in a sign of solidarity. I feel connected to my family in this moment as I never had before- one stem of many, rising from a shared root.
Anise Hyssop teaches the medicine of gathering. They do not bloom for themselves alone — their purple spires stand like an open table, and the whole neighborhood arrives: bees and butterflies, hummingbirds and wasps, drinking side by side without quarrel. Below the soil, they are never solitary; each stem rises from a shared root, a colony holding itself together in wind that would topple a lone stalk. Their medicine moves the same way — warming what has gone cold, opening what grief has sealed shut, drawing what is stuck inward back out toward the surface, toward the light, toward others. When the storms come, as they always do, Anise Hyssop remembers what we forget: that sweetness is meant to be shared, that no one weathers the season alone, and that the strongest thing a being can do is let themselves be part of the gathering. Connected to each other, we are stronger.
